olive bites home of uncorked + polarity: the jersey head nod and the …

May 18th, 2012
Sooo now that the weather is warmer

(and I need to lose the 5 pounds of rice pudding I somehow managed to pack on my hips last winter)

I am back to my daily almost daily walk/run around our local reservoir.

(and by walk/run I actually mean walk but there is this one desolated area where I always run full out – I have no idea why I do this – I guess so I can call it a run)

I usually go around the same time, which is not such a good safety thing, but I have my regular peeps there that I do not want to miss.

Now, of course, I do not actually speak to any of these peeps, but we do this head nod to each other that says “Hello. I know you. Yes, this weather is amazing or yes, we are tough Jersey girls (and guys – although the guys are not so tough which is why Jersey girls are world-wide famous and no one is writing songs about the guys) and this weather sucks but we are out here anyway.”

Head nods in Jersey are kind of like the myriad vocabulary Inuits have for ‘snow’ – we can say alot with very limited head movement.

(maybe so we don’t mess our hair)

In fact my smirky nod to a mom putting sunblock on her child was really an entire head nod conversation about that crazy Jersey tanning mom that we both agreed is scary and sad and that we really, really wish was from somewhere else.

I feel a certain comfort in seeing the same faces everyday.

There is a couple who run with their dog – a very skinny brown dog who always looks up at me with eyes that whisper “help me, these people are crazy“, a very old, very sweaty, very red man who encourages me to keep my CPR skills up to date, just in case and a woman who walks very fast clutching a golf club – the flat kind not the knobby kind, that would be weird.

(I don’t nod or make eye contact with this one – she is my pacer though – I am always very happy to see her because she really keeps me moving – I am not sure what she will do if she catches up with me, or me with her so I have to maintain an equal distance – once she stopped at the port-a-john and I caught up with her, it was kind of terrifying, but at least I know who to ask to partner with me if I ever get invited to a miniature golf tournament)

Anyhoo, these walks have me thinking we need some walker/runner tips to keep us safe this spring:

1. If you are on a road – face traffic. You can see the cars coming at you and jump out of the way if necessary – you can also avoid dark panel vans carrying those guys with the candy and missing puppy posters.

2. Keep your music low. You need to be able to hear horns and dogs and people screaming “STOP” (and of course ice cream trucks because sometimes you just gotta have a pushup icepop).

3. Vary your route. Vary your time. Be safe.

4. Walk/run with a friend

(of course this means you actually have to have a friend which, of course, leaves this option out for me)

5. Be a 6’3″, 250 pound dude

(or bring one with you – hubs has knee problems, so I still need to find one of these)

That’s all I got- I am off to the reservoir since it closes at dusk. Have a wonderful weekend everyone – take some time to get outdoors – if you are in Jersey though – be careful – there is a woman with a nine iron out there somewhere ….

xo all

* no matter how slow you run by modern elements

Snooki Inspired by Tanning Mom

May 18th, 2012

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi announced today that she’ll soon be turning to fellow Jersey girl Patricia Krentcil for parenting advice.

The Jersey Shore star told OMGG.com that she’s inspired by the way the Tanning Mom is able to manage a busy career while keeping her daughter so golden brown.

Krentcil has been accused of causing skin burns to her six-year-old by taking her into a tanning booth, but Snooki says the complaints are being made by “jealous haters.”

“Anyone saying bad stuff about Patricia is racist,” Polizzi told us. “It’s sad the way people are judging her based on the color of her skin.”

Playboy Says "No" to Tanning Mom Patricia Krentcil

May 15th, 2012

Playboy has said “no” to any thoughts  Nutley Tanning Mom Patricia Krentcil has about posing for the magazine, or any other Playboy platform.

TMZ caught up with Krentcil on Mother’s Day and asked her several questions in her driveway, including if she would consider an offer from Playboy.

Krenticil put her arm around a friend who laughed at the question and said, “Of course!” before laughing again and hiking up her black dress to show some thigh before heading into the house.

A Playboy source tells TMZ, “It wouldn’t even be considered” — Hef wouldn’t let TM pose in the magazine or ANY Playboy outlet. Simply put — Tanning Mom just isn’t Playboy material.”

As for a Tanning Mom reality show, Krentcil replied, “There’s a couple people that want me.”

Teen Tanning Bed Ban Legislation Sails … – New Jersey 101.5 Radio

May 15th, 2012

The story of the New Jersey mother accused of taking her then 5-year-old daughter into a tanning booth last month where the kindergartener allegedly sustained serious burns has gone global. The so-called tanoholic mom was even parodied during a recent Saturday Night Live sketch. Yesterday, the Assembly Women and Children Committee approved a bill that would make it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to use an indoor tanning facility.

Tanning Bed Ban for anyone under 18?

Flickr User Hendricks Photos

According to a new American Cancer Society (ACS) study the rate of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer has increased 43% over the last decade which coincides with a boom in the indoor tanning industry.

The World Health Organization (WHO) puts tanning beds in the highest cancer risk category – group 1 – ‘carcinogenic to humans,’” says ACS, New Jersey director of advocacy, Ethan Hasbrouck. “That’s the same class as arsenic, asbestos, benzene, dioxin, mustard gas, tobacco smoke and vinyl chloride. According to the WHO, use of tanning beds before the age of 30 increases the risk of melanoma 75 percent. The bill has cleared a hurdle in the Assembly, but there is still much to do. The American Cancer Society urges the full Assembly to adopt this measure and urges the Senate to move this bill quickly through committee and onto the floor for a vote.”

Dr. Rob Paull, a board-certified dermatologist representing the Dermatological Society of New Jersey, American Academy of Dermatology Association and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association says, “Despite what you may hear from opponents of this bill today, the causal relationship between UV radiation from tanning beds and the development of skin cancer is based on data from numerous scientific research studies. The science is clear. If you use indoor tanning beds, your risk of developing skin cancer significantly increases.”

Opponents fear the ban will damage small business and claim it strips the right of parents to make decisions for their own children. The bill’s sponsors point out that this is not unprecedented because there are plenty of laws to protect children. They cite, seat belt and helmet laws and the minimum drinking and smoking age.

Aly Dougherty, a 27-year-old stage 3 melanoma survivor knows firsthand the pain and suffering indoor tanning can cause. She explains, “Tanning beds are not safe for anyone, let alone kids and I have the scars to prove this. When I was a teenager I used indoor tanning often before proms and other events. I thought I was invincible. Little did I know that I would be diagnosed with skin cancer years later.”

In July, Aly will be 6-years cancer-free.

“As a 21-year-old, you’re forced into thinking; am I going to die? I mean what’s going to happen here,” says Aly. “Why isn’t anyone being protected against tanning? I went tanning. I got melanoma, but now I ask; when is this going to stop?”

In an oddly ironic twist, Aly is from Nutley as is Patricia Krentcil who was charged last month in North Jersey with child endangerment. Police say the Krentcil, whose skin is bronze-colored from her regular tanning salon visits, took her daughter into a tanning booth. The girl was 5 at the time but has since turned 6. Police say they were alerted by the kindergartener’s school in Nutley because the girl was in pain from a sunburn.

Patricia Krentcil has pleaded not guilty. She says her daughter’s burn came from the sun on an unusually warm April day and that she would never take the girl into a tanning booth.

New Jersey already bans anyone under the age of 14 from using indoor tanning. Adding further irony, when former Governor Jon Corzine signed that bill into law, he did it in Nutley. Those 14-18 must have parental permission. Last year a bill to ban indoor tanning by all minors was passed in the State Senate, but failed to make it through the full Assembly. Currently Vermont and California are only two states with such a ban. In the indoor tanning industry argues a ban like this in New Jersey could seriously hurt business.

Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi has signed on as a co-sponsor of Conaway’s bill.

She says, “When I was a teenager I oftentimes used tanning beds. At the time they were marketed as the ‘safe alternative to the sun.’ Before such events as the prom, homecoming and spring break my girlfriends and I spent hours at the tanning salons. Never did I expect that from using tanning beds I would be diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of malignant melanoma at the age of 25.”

New Jersey tanning mom inspires action figure Patricia Krentcil

May 12th, 2012

New Jersey tanning mom inspires action figure Patricia Krentcil and the doll she inspired (AP/HeroBuilders.com) The overly tan New Jersey mom accused of taking her young daughter tanning has inspired an action figure. The $29.95 "Tanorexic" mom doll is available from HeroBuilders.com, the custom doll retailer behind the Michaele Salahi action figure, Anthony Weiner doll and other attention-grabbing toys. Patricia Krentcil, the real "tanning mom," pleaded not guilty to child endangerment charges last week. She was arrested late last month in Nutley, NJ, after police were called to her 5-year-old daughter’s school. Krentcil claims she took her daughter with her to the salon but that her daughter never entered a tanning booth. "I tan, she doesn’t tan," the 44-year-old Krentcil said. "I’m in the booth, she’s in the room. That’s all there is to it." New Jersey state law prohibits children under the age of 14 from tanning booths. Children between the ages of 14 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Police were alerted by school officials, who say Krentcil’s daughter showed up for school with what appeared to be a sunburn, then told classmates she "went tanning with Mommy." Rich Krentcil, the girl’s father, told NBC the teacher misinterpreted his daughter. "This whole big thing happened, and everyone got involved," he said. "It was 85 degrees outside, she got sunburned. That’s it. That’s all that happened."

The Jersey Curse (Not Tanning Beds) | The Burgundy Warpath

May 12th, 2012

I called my dad the night of April 26, 2012 and said “we got him,” referring to the Redskins’ shiny new quarterback, Robert Griffin III.

“Whatever you do, don’t buy his jersey,” said my dad.

As fans, we generally all have our suspicions. Maybe you watch the games at a certain bar, or have a routine you follow on game day or you wear your special lucky underwear.

Well, I’ve banned myself from ever buying another Redskins jersey. I have a jersey curse.

When I buy your jersey, it’s like that player just watched the tape from “The Ring.”

I’m pretty sure they get a call as soon as I buy it, with some raspy girl’s voice on the other end. “Seven days,” it groans, right before the sound of dial tone.

It all started when I purchased my first Redskins jersey in 2002, a Stephen Davis. The next year…Spurrier, and he’s shipped off to Carolina.

Then before the 2005 season I buy an Arrington jersey. He has a falling out with the coaches, the owner and ends up with the Giants, where his career comes to an abrupt end.

2006. I get a Clinton Portis jersey. He injures his shoulder in a fucking preseason game.

But what really pushed me over the edge was what happened in 2007. I bought a Sean Taylor jersey and as we all know he was murdered in his Miami home.

Since then I have not and will not buy any Redskins jersey. I stay away from them like they are covered in some anthrax/herpes hybrid.

Well, come to think of it, maybe I can find a good deal on an Eli Manning…

Nutley Tanning Mom – Would You Watch Her Reality Show?

May 12th, 2012
Patricia Krentcil

Courtesy: ABC News

There’s literally a reality show for everything now. Some TV channels have deserted a majority of their original programming to switch to the reality format. The funny part about this is that it almost always works. Elimination shows like Survivor, American Idol and The Bachelor work because it keeps the viewer interested in who is going to stay or go. Show like Jersey Shore and Real World on MTV get huge ratings as well because all of the cast members, carefully selected, are complete train-wrecks. Reality TV works, no matter what way you slice it.

Now imagine a reality show that takes you through the everyday life of Patricia Krentcil, the Tanning Mom from Nutley. Keep in mind this is not actually happening, but imagine if it was. It could be some of the most compelling television of all time. Her life is fascinating. You could even turn it into a game show of sorts. Have Patricia travel to tanning salons all around the country and see which tanning salons accept her.

What do you think? Take our poll below.
